African Penguins at Boulders Beach

by Lynn Salmon <>{

African Penguins (Speniscus demersus), used to be called Jackass Penguins because of the braying sound they make. No matter the name, they are a fun bunch of birds to hang out with and Boulders Beach is a great place to see them. Boardwalks lead you to a couple of viewing platforms for very close looks at the penguins who are indifferent to the people paparazzi. This colony of nearly 3000 African Penguins started with just two breeding pairs in 1982.

This guy had a Kelp Gull pecking at his back to steal loose feathers

Come in the waters great!

Many of the penguins are in various stages of molt.

And there are boulders of course
